About the Latimore Tourist Home
The Latimore Tourist Home located at 318 South Houston Avenue in Russellville, Arkansas was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 27, 2012.
Listed in The Negro Motorists Green Book in 1939, or before, it was the only accommodation between Little Rock and Fort Smith where a Black traveler could find food and lodging during the Jim Crow era of segregation.
Though the Civil Rights Act passed Congress in 1964, the Latimore Tourist Home remained in business until the mid 1970s.
For many years, the community has questioned the future of the Latimore Tourist Home. With the interest of the city of Russellville, many are now confident that this community landmark will be saved. With the assistance of many contributors, the Friends of the Latimore Tourist Home,Inc. has been established as the local nonprofit organization tasked with providing for the preservation, maintenance, restoration and operation of the Latimore Tourist Home.
